The first known fatality was in a fire in Fountaingrove Canyon in San Bernardino County, California, authorities said Sunday. Those who had to flee a wildfire threatening their communities were allowed to return home Friday as firefighters took root in a swarm of blazes near California's second-largest city. The SCU Lightning Complex fire, considered the third-largest in the state's history and so far burning 339,968 acres (34,985 acres), has grown to 343,985 acres and is 10% contained, according to Cal Fire. 3, is being besieged by the U.S. Forest Service and California's Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and is burning about 1,500 acres near the city of Los Angeles, according to a news release from the agency.
The fire at the SCU Lightning Complex, the third-largest in the state's history and burning 34,985 acres so far, was only 10% contained by Sunday morning, according to Cal Fire. The complex, which is burning in Fountaingrove Canyon in San Bernardino County, about 30 miles south of Los Angeles, covers an area of 32,968 acres.
The fire grew only slightly overnight to 78,000 acres, but containment was expanded to 13% overnight, Cal Fire officials said, and the fire was being fought by a volunteer group led by four faculty and staff members from the University of Davis. In 2010, the California Office of Emergency Services recognized the San Bernardino County Fire Department as a federal disaster management agency and certified all firefighters qualified to respond to statewide disasters. The merger brought together the San Diego County Fire District, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department and Riverside County Sheriff's Department into a single jurisdiction.
The CZU Lightning Complex fire barely survived a fire at a carport in Fountain Valley, California, on Wednesday, August 4, 2014. Firefighters from the Garden State University at the University of California, Davis, assisted firefighters from Fountain Valley in fighting the carport fire.
These dedicated teams were able to provide emergency services to Brunnental and surrounding towns and other areas in the area. Cal Fire officials say more resources are arriving from across the state and more than 14,000 firefighters are out of action. The assistance to firefighters continues to flow from state to state and beyond, with more than 14,000 firefighters in the field, "said California's Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE).
